Mention accounts with custom mentions
On this page
Save a brand or person once, link it to their profile on each network, then tag them in any post with one @mention.
Before you start
- Connect at least one account on each network you want to look people up on. The search uses your connected accounts.
- Custom mentions are saved in the workspace you're in.
- Mentions work on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky and X. The other networks don't support them.
Open the feature
Choose Publish in the left sidebar to open the Publish Content composer. Click the @ icon (Manage custom mentions) in the toolbar below the text box. If you don't see it, open More tools and choose Mention. The Custom mentions panel opens.
Steps
- In the Custom mentions panel, click Create a custom mention. The New custom mention window opens.
- Under Who do you want to mention?, type the brand or person in Brand or person name, then click Search.
- Check the network rows below the search box. Search fills in the best match it finds on each network, and the heading changes to Check @name on each network.
- Fix any row that's wrong or empty:
- Type in the network's field and pick the right profile from the list.
- For X and Instagram, you can also type the username yourself.
- Click Verify to open the profile in a new tab and check it's the right one. For a LinkedIn company you picked from the list, it opens the company's page. Otherwise it opens a LinkedIn search for the name.
- Click the bin icon to clear a network you don't want to map.
- For Facebook, you can add more than one Page. Each Page you pick appears as a chip in the field. Search again and pick another to add it, or click Add all when several Pages match. Click the ✕ on a chip to remove that Page.
- Click Save mention.
- In your post, type @ followed by the mention's name, then pick it from the suggestions.
- Check each network's preview, then schedule or save the post as usual.
- To change a mention later, open the Custom mentions panel and click the pencil icon next to it. The Edit custom mention window opens. Update the network rows and click Save mention.
- To delete a mention, click the bin icon next to it, then click Delete.
Expected result
The mention appears in the Custom mentions panel with an icon for each network you mapped. A Facebook icon with a number shows how many Pages the mention tags. When you add it to a post, each network gets its own tag for that brand or person. A mention with several Facebook Pages tags every one of them, separated by commas. On a network you didn't map, the mention stays as plain text.
Example
You're promoting a partner café on your Facebook Page and X account. Open More tools and choose Mention, then click Create a custom mention. Type "AcmeCoffee" in Brand or person name and click Search. In the Facebook row, pick the café's Page from the list. In the X row, pick their account. Click Save mention. Now write your post and type @AcmeCoffee, then pick it from the suggestions. Facebook tags the café's Page and X tags their X account.
Limits and permissions
- Custom mentions can only be mapped to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky and X.
- For Facebook, LinkedIn and Bluesky, you must pick a profile from the search results. A typed name alone can't be saved.
- One mention can tag up to 20 Facebook Pages. Other networks take one profile each.
- The character count for Facebook includes every Page name the mention adds, not just the short mention. If the names make the post longer than Facebook allows, you can't schedule it until you shorten the post or remove some Pages.
- The mention's name comes from what you type in Brand or person name. Spaces and symbols are removed, so it can only contain letters, numbers, dots, underscores and hyphens.
- You can't rename a mention after you save it. To use a different name, create a new mention.
Troubleshooting
- You see "No matches found. Search and pick a result in each network's field to map it.": type in each network's field and pick a result, or type the username for X or Instagram.
- A network row finds nothing: check you have an account connected on that network in this workspace.
- You see "Search and select a Facebook profile, or clear the Facebook field.": pick a result from the list, or click the bin icon to clear that row. The same applies to LinkedIn and Bluesky.
- You see "Enter a valid X username (letters, numbers, and underscores, up to 15 characters), or pick a search result.": fix the username or pick a result instead.
- You see "Map at least one network to this mention.": fill in at least one network row before you click Save mention.
- The Facebook field won't take another Page: you've reached the limit of 20. Remove a Page to add another.
- You see "The character limit is exceeded for your Facebook Page." (or "Facebook Group."): a mention with several Pages adds every Page name to the post. Shorten the post or remove some Pages from the mention.
- Save mention is greyed out: type a name in Brand or person name and fill in at least one network row.
