Choose network-specific post options
On this page
Set the format and additional fields required by each selected social network.
Before you start
Select the intended social account and prepare its text and media. Options depend on the network, account type, media and posting method.
Open the feature
Open Publish Content and expand the selected network’s Options section below the composer.
Steps
- For Facebook or Instagram, choose Post, Reel or Story where offered. Review any feed, trial reel, audio, collaborator or account-tagging controls shown for that format. On an Instagram Reel, Trial reel and Show Reel on Feed can’t both be on; see Prepare a video. To compare versions of one reel, use Test versions under Trial reel on an Instagram Reel (only for accounts that have reel tests turned on); see Test reel versions.
- For LinkedIn, review the applicable profile privacy or Page audience controls. Use the document fields for a document post and the video fields for a video.
- For TikTok, review comments, Duets, Stitches and the AI-generated or commercial-content disclosures.
- For Google Business Profile, choose Post, Event or Offer. Complete event dates or offer fields when shown.
- For Threads, optionally add a topic and choose Who can reply; for Mastodon, review sensitive-content and warning fields; for X (Twitter), check any selected community and choose Who can reply.
- Resolve the displayed validation, check each account’s preview, then save or schedule.
YouTube: privacy, category and tags
- Expand YouTube Options and choose Video or Shorts under Post Type.
- Under Privacy Status, choose Public, Private or Unlisted. Public is selected to start with.
- Optionally, open Select Category under Category (Optional) and pick the category that fits your video.
- Under Video Tags, type a keyword and enter a comma after each tag.
- To add a saved set of tags, click the tag icon next to Video Tags and click a group. Its tags are added to the post.
- To save a new set, click the tag icon, then Add a New Group. Type a Video Tag Group Name, add tags under Video Tags and click Add. To change a group, click its edit icon, then click Update, or Delete to remove it.
YouTube: subtitles and additional video settings
For a Video, use Add Subtitles (Optional) to upload or drag in your subtitle file. Wait for the upload, choose Select language, and review Auto-sync if you want YouTube to synchronize the subtitles with the audio. YouTube may need time to process them. Use the file's remove control to remove or replace it before scheduling. Subtitles are not offered for Shorts.
Under License (Optional), choose the license appropriate for your video. Review Embeddable, Notify Subscribers and Made For Kids where shown. Set these to match your intended distribution and audience before saving; available options depend on the selected post type. Uploading a subtitle file alone does not schedule or publish the video.
Pinterest: pin title and website
- Expand Pinterest Options.
- Type a title for the pin under Title, if you want one.
- Website is optional. Leave it blank for a pin without a destination link. If you add one, use a valid full destination address, not a link shortener. If the app rejects a shortened or redirecting link, replace it with the final destination URL.
Tag a location on Facebook, Instagram or Threads
Threads location tagging is available only when enabled for your account. If it isn't available, you can publish the Threads post without a location.
- Select a Facebook Page, an Instagram Business account or a Threads account. A location pin icon appears in the toolbar under your post text.
- Click the pin icon. Add Location opens with a row for each network you selected, such as Facebook, Instagram Professional or Threads.
- Click a network, type a place under Search for location and pick it from the list.
- Repeat for the other network if you want. To remove a location, click the trash icon next to it.
Choose who can reply on X or Threads
- Select an X or Threads account and open X Options or Threads Options.
- Under Who can reply, pick who can reply to the post. Everyone is the default.
- X: Everyone, Accounts you follow, Mentioned accounts only, Verified accounts only or Subscribers only (needs X Subscriptions).
- Threads: Everyone, Accounts you follow, Mentioned accounts only or Your followers only.
- Schedule or publish the post. The setting is sent with the post.
The setting applies only to X and Threads. Other selected networks publish as usual.
Add a background to a Facebook text post
- Select a Facebook Page and keep Post as the format under Facebook Options.
- Write your text. Don't add an image or video.
- Click the background icon in the toolbar under your post text. Its tooltip says Add a Facebook background.
- In Choose Background, click a swatch under Gradients, Solids or Decorative.
- To remove the background, click the icon again and choose None.
Calls to action, Instagram tags and Page audiences
For a supported Facebook or Google Business post, choose the offered call-to-action button and complete its required destination fields. Check the resulting preview before saving.
For an eligible Instagram format, open the audio control to choose audio, or the user-tagging control to add the intended accounts. Review the format restrictions and selected tags; audio and tags are not available for every account or media type.
For a LinkedIn Page, open its audience-targeting control, choose the supported audience criteria and save. Check the audience summary before scheduling. Reconnect unauthorized Pages first. A paid boost and organic audience targeting cannot be combined on the same post.
With Ads on for your account, a Facebook Page, Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn Page post shows Boost this post. Click Set up boost to set the audience and budget now. The box then shows Boost ready with the budget, Edit and Remove. When you schedule the post, the boost is saved with it and sent for review when the post publishes. See Boost a post with Ads.
Expected result
Each selected account keeps its applicable format and options with the post.
A location you tag shows next to the pin icon. A Facebook background shows behind your text in the Facebook preview.
Example
Choose Event for a Google Business Profile announcement and enter the event’s start and end dates before scheduling.
Limits and permissions
- Available controls are not identical across profiles or networks.
- A preview is an approximation of the final network post.
- Threads topics apply to the first post of a thread.
- Who can reply applies to the first post of a thread. On Threads it can't be changed after the post is published.
- On X, a first comment and a thread are posted as replies, which a limit can block. While Who can reply on X is limited, you can't add an X first comment.
- You can always add a thread, on X too. Adding an X thread sets Who can reply on X back to Everyone, and a message tells you so: thread posts are replies, which a limit can block.
- Who can reply on Threads doesn't block anything: you can add a Threads first comment or thread with any setting.
- On X, if you've already written a first comment or thread, only Everyone can be picked under Who can reply. The reason is shown under the list.
- Subscribers only on X works only if you have X Subscriptions.
- A YouTube video Title can be up to 100 characters. The counter under Video Tags turns red after 500 characters. A video tag group name can be up to 30 characters.
- You can only pick a playlist when one YouTube account is selected.
- A Facebook background works on text-only Facebook Page posts. You can't add media while a background is on, or add a background while media is attached.
- A disclosure, audience setting or collaborator field should match the actual content and intended recipients.
Troubleshooting
LinkedIn first-comment restrictions do not disable TikTok or Google Business options. TikTok comments remain unavailable when comments are disabled or the post uses mobile-notification publishing.
- A field disappeared: check the selected account, media type and post format.
- A required-field warning appears: complete the field in that account’s Options section.
- Subtitles are missing: check that Post Type is Video, not Shorts. After uploading subtitles, choose their language and resolve any file or language warning before scheduling.
- Different accounts need different copy: use Customize before scheduling.
- There's no location pin icon: select a Facebook Page or an Instagram Business account. For a Threads-only post, the icon appears only when Threads location tagging is enabled for your account.
- No location found: try a shorter or different place name under Search for location.
- Location search asks you to reconnect the account: that account's access has expired. Reconnect it when prompted, then search again.
- The X first comment is greyed out: set Who can reply to Everyone to add a first comment.
- Who can reply on X only offers Everyone: remove the X first comment and thread, then pick a limit.
- The media button is greyed out: remove the Facebook background first, or choose None in Choose Background.
- The background icon is greyed out: remove the image or video from the post.
- Please enter a valid URL appears under Pinterest Options: check the address under Website is a full web address.
