Connect your own AI key
On this page
Connect your own AI provider key so the assistant runs on it, with unlimited chats. Social Champ doesn't charge extra for this.
Before you start
- The assistant may not be available on your account yet.
- Get an API key from Claude, ChatGPT (OpenAI) or Gemini. You pay that provider for what you use.
- Keep the key private. Only paste it into the key field, never into the chat.
Open the feature
Press Ctrl + J (⌘ + J on Mac) to open the assistant panel. At the bottom, next to your usage, click Add your own AI key. The Connect your AI key dialog opens.
Steps
- Choose your provider: Claude, ChatGPT (OpenAI) or Gemini.
- Follow How to get your key: go to the provider's site shown, sign in and create a new API key, then copy it.
- Paste the key into the key field.
- Click Connect.
- When you see that your provider is connected, click Done.
Expected result
The usage line in the assistant panel changes to On your own key — unlimited, and Add your own AI key becomes Manage key →. Your chats no longer count against your plan's allowance.
Example
You keep running out of chats before the month ends. Create a key on your Gemini account and copy it. In the assistant panel, click Add your own AI key, choose Gemini, paste the key and click Connect. Click Done, then send a test question such as "What's on my calendar this week?".
Limits and permissions
Each workspace has one active key per provider. Saving another key for the same provider replaces its previous active key; it does not add a second active key.
- Only the account owner and the workspace's admins can add or manage keys. Editors and other roles don't see Add your own AI key, but their chats in the workspace still run on its key.
- A key saved before keys moved to workspaces is listed as Account-wide. Every workspace without a key of its own uses it. A workspace's own key comes first.
- Only the account owner can revoke an Account-wide key, because revoking it stops it in every workspace that uses it.
- Saved keys are encrypted and can't be shown again. If you lose one, click Revoke and add a new key.
- Your key doesn't change what you're allowed to do in Social Champ. Workspace roles and network rules still apply.
- The AI Content Wizard doesn't use this key. It has its own Connect GPT Pro option.
Troubleshooting
- You see "Couldn't connect that key. Check it's active and try again.": check you picked the right provider, copied the whole key and that the key is active on the provider's site.
- The usage line still shows chats left: close and reopen the assistant panel. If it hasn't changed, check the key is listed under Settings > Workspace > Switch AI Keys for the workspace you're in.
- The assistant stops replying on your key: check the key is still active and has credit with your provider. If not, click Revoke and add a new key.
