Add tracking parameters to a link
On this page
Add UTM codes to the links in your posts, so Google Analytics can show which traffic came from each social account.
Before you start
- Decide which accounts to track and what values to use for source, medium and campaign name.
- UTM codes set here apply to links in your published posts. Links in Engage replies have their own settings. See Configure Engage link tracking.
Open the feature
Open Settings, then choose Workspace > UTM Tracking. The Google Analytics Campaign Tracking (UTM Code) page opens.
Steps
- Click Create New. If you haven't set up tracking yet, click Get Started.
- Under Step 1 - Select Account(s), open the account list and tick the accounts to track.
- Under Step 2 - Create Campaign, fill in the fields you need:
- Campaign Source (UTM_Source): where the traffic comes from, for example facebook.
- Campaign Medium (UTM_Medium): the type of channel, for example social.
- Campaign Name (UTM_Name): the promotion or campaign, for example new_year_sale.
- Campaign Term (UTM_Term): paid keywords.
- Campaign Content (UTM_Content): a label to tell apart links that go to the same page.
- To track the same post published at different times, tick Make this URL unique.
- Click Save.
Edit or remove a saved UTM campaign
Return to UTM Tracking, find the saved campaign and use its edit action to change the tracking fields. Save and check the resulting campaign. To remove an unused campaign, use its delete action and review the confirmation. Editing a saved campaign does not rewrite links already published on social networks.
Expected result
You see UTM added successfully, and each account you chose appears on the page with its campaign name and a toggle. From then on, links in that account's posts get your UTM codes when the post publishes.
Example
To track traffic from your Instagram and LinkedIn posts for a spring sale, open Settings > Workspace > UTM Tracking and click Create New. Tick both accounts. Type social in Campaign Medium (UTM_Medium) and spring_sale in Campaign Name (UTM_Name), then click Save. Every link those accounts publish now carries utm_medium=social and utm_campaign=spring_sale.
Limits and permissions
- UTM Tracking depends on your plan and needs permission to manage social accounts.
- Each field can be up to 100 characters. Empty fields are left out of the link.
- If a link in your post already has a UTM value, it's kept. Social Champ only adds the values that are missing.
- To pause tracking for an account, switch off its toggle. Editing a campaign doesn't change whether it's on or off.
- Recycle campaigns have their own UTM Tracking setting. See Configure a Recycle campaign.
Troubleshooting
- Links publish without UTM codes: check the account's toggle is on in UTM Tracking, and that at least one field is filled in.
- A value in the link isn't the one you set: the link already had that UTM value in your post. Remove it from the link, or leave it as it is.
- You see "Please select at least 1 social account": tick an account under Step 1 - Select Account(s).
- Save is greyed out: shorten any field over 100 characters.
- You can't find an account's campaign: type in Search UTM, or switch between grid and list view.
