Configure Engage link tracking
On this page
Add UTM parameters to links in the replies and comments you send from the Engage inbox, so the traffic shows up in your analytics, shorten them to champ.ly links, or both. Each setting works on its own.
Before you start
- You need the Manage Engage permission to change these settings. Without it, the page is read-only.
- Check you're in the right workspace. The settings apply to the whole workspace.
- Decide what to use for source, medium and campaign so they match your other tracking.
Open the feature
Choose Engage in the left sidebar. Click the settings icon at the top right of the inbox and choose Link Tracking. The Link tracking page opens.
Steps
- Under UTM parameters, switch on Add UTM parameters to links in Engage replies.
- Fill in Source, Medium and Campaign.
- If you need them, fill in Term (Optional) and Content (Optional).
- Check the link under Preview.
- To use short links, switch on Shorten links in Engage replies (champ.ly) under Link shortening. You can do this with UTM parameters on or off.
- Click Save Changes.
Expected result
You see Link tracking settings saved, and each section you switched on shows On. From then on, links in replies and comments sent from the inbox, including automated replies, get your UTM parameters when they're sent if UTM parameters are on. With shortening on, they're sent as a champ.ly link. With both on, the link with your UTM parameters is the one that gets shortened.
Example
To see Engage traffic as its own campaign in your analytics, switch on Add UTM parameters to links in Engage replies. Type socialchamp in Source, engage_reply in Medium and community in Campaign. Preview shows https://www.socialchamp.com/pricing?utm_source=socialchamp&utm_medium=engage_reply&utm_campaign=community. Click Save Changes. When you next reply with a link to your pricing page, the link carries these parameters.
Limits and permissions
- Only people with the Manage Engage permission can change these settings. Others see You don't have the Manage Engage permission, so these settings are read-only for you.
- The settings apply to every social network in the workspace.
- The parameters are added when the reply is sent, so you won't see them in the text box.
- If a link already has a UTM parameter, that value is kept and not replaced.
- Shortening works with or without UTM parameters. Links that are already champ.ly links aren't shortened again. If the shortening service is unavailable, the full link is sent instead.
- If adding parameters would push a reply over the network's character limit, the reply is sent without them.
- These settings are separate from the UTM settings for posts you publish. See Add tracking parameters to a link.
Troubleshooting
- The UTM fields are greyed out: switch on Add UTM parameters to links in Engage replies first. If the switches are greyed out too, you need the Manage Engage permission.
- You see "Could not load link tracking settings.": click Retry.
- A sent link has no parameters: check UTM parameters shows On and you clicked Save Changes. If the link already had all its UTM parameters, it's sent unchanged.
- You want to undo unsaved edits: click Cancel to reload your saved settings.
